The performance underscored a strong day for the Silver Arrows, as George Russell had previously topped the timesheets during the opening practice session earlier in the day.
Incident-Filled Session at Madring
While the field largely managed the challenges of the circuit, the second practice was interrupted by a red flag following a heavy collision involving Racing Bulls rookie Arvid Lindblad. The young driver lost control at the tricky 90-degree left-hander at Turn 13, slamming into the barriers. Although Lindblad was unhurt, the incident caused significant damage to his vehicle and forced a 10-minute pause in proceedings to facilitate barrier repairs.
Prior to his accident, Lindblad had demonstrated impressive pace, finishing the session in fourth position. Behind him, George Russell secured the fifth-fastest time, followed by four-time world champion Max Verstappen in the Red Bull and McLaren’s Oscar Piastri. The session proved difficult for Lando Norris, who was restricted to just two laps due to persistent gearbox issues that kept him in the pits for the remainder of the afternoon.
Technical Challenges and Track Safety
The Madring circuit has drawn significant attention for its technical difficulty, with drivers expressing concerns regarding its safety profile leading into the weekend. George Russell had previously characterized the venue as the riskiest on the current calendar. These concerns were amplified earlier in the day following a separate incident in a Formula Two race, which saw Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak escape a blazing car unharmed.
Despite these early warnings, the field maintained a high level of professionalism throughout the remainder of the session. Once the track was cleared following the repairs to the Turn 13 barriers, drivers returned to the circuit for the final 10 minutes of running. Yuki Tsunoda rounded out the top eight for Racing Bulls, finishing ahead of Haas driver Esteban Ocon and Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, who completed the top ten.
