Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has launched a blistering attack on the club’s current playing squad, describing them as "selfish" and "babies" in the wake of a disastrous Champions League performance. The former striker’s comments follow a humiliating 4-1 defeat to Como on Wednesday, a result that has left manager Michael Carrick fighting to retain his position at the helm.

The atmosphere at Old Trafford has soured significantly, with the team currently languishing in 13th place in the Premier League. With a crucial fixture against Bournemouth approaching this Sunday, there is genuine concern that the club could slip into the bottom three depending on other results. This poor domestic start, the worst in decades, has been compounded by internal friction and public displays of dissent from senior players.

Internal Discord and Public Criticism

The crisis deepened following the midweek European loss when captain Bruno Fernandes publicly questioned the tactical approach employed by Carrick, suggesting the team needed to be "braver." This follows recent comments from defender Lisandro Martinez, who publicly criticised the club's board for a perceived lack of investment during the transfer window.

Rooney, who remains the club's all-time leading goalscorer, expressed his "shock" and "disbelief" at the team's recent displays. Speaking on The United Stand podcast, the former England captain suggested that the public airing of grievances is symptomatic of a fractured dressing room. He specifically pointed to Martinez’s earlier comments as a catalyst for the current instability, warning that such public outbursts threaten to dismantle the unity of the squad.

"When Martinez came out, I said this is an absolute nightmare because it will rip the dressing room apart," Rooney stated. He argued that the players are failing to accept accountability for their performances on the pitch, instead choosing to deflect blame onto the coaching staff and the board. According to Rooney, the current group lacks the necessary commitment to their teammates, the staff, and the supporters, prioritising individual interests over the collective good of the club.

"These players, they're selfish. They don't care about their team-mates, don't care about the manager, the staff or the fans, they care about themselves," Rooney added. He likened their behaviour to "babies" throwing toys out of the pram whenever circumstances do not align with their personal expectations. As Carrick prepares his side for the weekend, the pressure on the squad to respond to these stinging accusations is immense.
