Somali Referee Returns from FIFA World Cup in the U.S. to Officiate UEFA Super Cup

Just weeks after the conclusion of the World Cup, the UEFA Super Cup is set to take center stage in Salzburg on Wednesday, featuring a clash between Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Aston Villa. This annual event pits the champions of the Champions League against the Europa League winners, providing UEFA with an opportunity to assert its prominence amid ongoing tensions with FIFA, particularly following controversial actions by FIFA President Gianni Infantino.

Adding to the intrigue of the match is the appointment of Somali referee Omar Artan, who was previously barred from officiating at the World Cup due to alleged connections to terrorist organizations, a claim made by U.S. officials without substantiation. UEFA's decision to select Artan, recognized as Africa's top referee last season, has been met with widespread approval and is seen as a strategic move in the ongoing power struggle between the two governing bodies.
