Spanish Police Launch Investigation Following Death of Tenerife Forward Jesus de Miguel

Spanish police have initiated an investigation into potential involuntary manslaughter following the tragic death of Tenerife forward Jesus de Miguel. The 30-year-old footballer passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest during a second-division match against FC Andorra, an incident that has sent shockwaves through the global football community.

The fatal collision occurred during stoppage time as De Miguel challenged for a ball near midfield. FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono had rushed out of his penalty area in an attempt to clear the play, resulting in a forceful impact to the forward's chest. De Miguel initially dropped to his knees before collapsing, leading to the immediate abandonment of the match, which was tied 2-2 at the time. Owono was issued a straight red card for the challenge.

Judicial Review and Club Response

While the National Police have launched an investigation, as is standard procedure under Spanish law for non-natural deaths, local authorities have indicated that criminal charges are unlikely. Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor Jose Luis Sanchez-Jauregui noted that the incident occurred during the normal course of play. Despite this, the impact of the tragedy has been profound, with Tenerife declaring six days of mourning and suspending all activities across their men’s, women’s, and youth squads.

Tenerife president Felipe Minambres stated that the club and its players will require professional support to process the loss. The club has requested the postponement of their upcoming league fixture against Granada, while fans are expected to gather at the stadium this Saturday to pay their respects. Rayco Garcia, the club’s largest shareholder, confirmed that De Miguel’s remains will be transported to Navahermosa for a final farewell ceremony.

Global Tributes and Wider Impact

The football world has united in grief, with messages of condolence pouring in from across the globe. High-profile figures including Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, and Kylian Mbappe expressed their sorrow on social media, while clubs such as Manchester United and Liverpool shared official statements of support. In Spain, the Football Federation postponed all upcoming Copa del Rey and Copa de la Reina matches, and UEFA announced that a moment of silence will be observed before all matches this week.

The incident has also had unfortunate secondary consequences; Michel Owono, a player for the sixth-division side Can Vidalet, reported receiving a wave of racist abuse from individuals who mistakenly identified him as the goalkeeper involved in the collision. Meanwhile, the football community continues to mourn a player who had built a career through the lower divisions of Spanish football since 2015. De Miguel, who joined Tenerife last year, is survived by his wife and daughter.
