BCCI Confirms WPL 2027 Schedule: Vadodara and Mumbai to Host Fifth Edition

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially confirmed the schedule for the fifth edition of the Women's Premier League (WPL), setting the stage for a high-stakes tournament spanning from January 14 to February 7, 2027. The upcoming competition will be hosted across two major venues, with Vadodara and Mumbai each slated to stage 11 of the 22 total matches.

Defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to kick off their campaign in the opening match against former titleholders Mumbai Indians. This highly anticipated curtain-raiser is scheduled to take place in Vadodara on January 14, marking the start of the tournament's first leg, which will continue in the city until January 24.

Tournament Structure and Playoff Path

Following the conclusion of the Vadodara leg, the tournament will shift to Mumbai, where the Cricket Club of India’s Brabourne Stadium will host the remainder of the fixtures starting January 26. The league stage is set to run in Mumbai until February 3, leading directly into the knockout phase of the competition.

The playoff structure remains consistent with previous seasons, featuring an Eliminator on February 5 between the second and third-placed teams. The winner of that clash will progress to the final on February 7, where they will face the team that finished at the top of the league standings. All matches throughout the tournament, including the playoffs, are scheduled to commence at 7:30 PM IST.

Future Expansion and League Growth

As the league prepares for its fifth season, discussions regarding the long-term future of the competition have already begun. BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia recently hinted that the board is exploring the possibility of expanding the WPL beyond its current five-team structure. Saikia noted that the board intends to hold brainstorming sessions to evaluate potential growth, focusing on increasing the number of teams and enhancing various operational areas, including coaching and selection processes.

Reflecting on the league's impact, Saikia described the WPL as a cornerstone of modern franchise cricket, noting its significant role in the development and success of women's cricket in India over the past four years. Meanwhile, the excitement for the 2027 season has been bolstered by recent auction activity, which saw Australian captain Sophie Molineux become the most expensive signing, joining the UP Warriorz for Rs 1.10 crore.
