India captain Shubman Gill has pointed to a moment of individual brilliance in the field as the catalyst for his side's five-wicket victory over New Zealand in the opening ODI at Eden Park. With the match impacted by persistent rain, India successfully navigated a revised target of 143 to secure a 1-0 lead in the five-match series.

The pivotal moment arrived while New Zealand were attempting to consolidate their innings through a partnership between Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips. Rohit Sharma’s sharp reflexes resulted in a crucial run-out of Mitchell, a dismissal that Gill identified as the definitive turning point. The Indian skipper noted that the pair had previously proven difficult to contain, making the breakthrough essential for shifting the momentum firmly in India's favour.

Disciplined bowling and clinical chase

India’s success was built upon a disciplined bowling display that restricted the hosts to 185 all out in 40.2 overs. Arshdeep Singh spearheaded the attack with a four-wicket haul, while Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj provided vital support, claiming three and two wickets respectively. Gill expressed particular satisfaction with the contributions of the younger bowlers, noting that Kamboj’s ability to generate movement and Brar’s capacity to extract extra bounce were perfectly suited to the conditions at Eden Park.

The chase was complicated by multiple rain interruptions, which necessitated adjustments to the target under the DLS method. Despite the pitch conditions becoming more challenging after the rain, Virat Kohli played a decisive role, scoring 74 runs off 51 balls. His partnership of 113 runs with Gill for the second wicket effectively neutralised the pressure, allowing India to reach the revised target of 143 for the loss of five wickets in 22.4 overs. Gill praised Kohli’s composed approach, which he felt simplified the task for the team during a fluctuating contest.
