Leonardo Balerdi Strikes Late to Rescue Roma in Thrilling Napoli Draw

Roma maintained their unbeaten start to the Serie A season in dramatic fashion on Saturday, as Leonardo Balerdi struck in the 89th minute to salvage a 3-3 draw against Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. The result keeps Gian Piero Gasperini’s side in the hunt at the top end of the table, though they now sit four points adrift of league leaders Lazio.

The encounter was a high-scoring affair that saw Napoli twice hold a lead, only for the visitors to show resilience in the closing stages. Roma’s coach, Gasperini, praised his squad’s composure after the match, noting that the impact of his substitutes was vital in securing the point. The draw extends Roma's unbeaten streak to eight matches, a run that continues to keep them firmly in the mix for the title race.

A Back-and-Forth Battle in Naples

Napoli looked to bounce back from their recent defeat to Venezia and took the lead in the 28th minute through a spectacular Frank Anguissa bicycle kick. The advantage was doubled shortly after the interval when Scott McTominay headed home a Matteo Politano cross. However, Roma responded with a Matias Soule strike from distance with 20 minutes remaining, before Balerdi leveled the score just four minutes later.

The drama intensified in the final stages when McTominay appeared to have secured all three points for the hosts with a clinical 30-yard strike past Pierluigi Gollini. Yet, Roma refused to yield, and Balerdi completed his brace by powering home a header from a Wesley Franca cross in the 89th minute. The late equalizer sparked frustration among the Napoli ranks, resulting in manager Massimiliano Allegri being sent off following protests regarding a potential foul in the build-up to the goal.

Lazio Ascends to the Summit

While Roma were held in Naples, Lazio capitalized on their opportunity to move to the top of the standings by securing a 2-1 victory over Parma at the Stadio Olimpico. Under the guidance of Gennaro Gattuso, the capital club has enjoyed a stellar start to the campaign, dropping only two points across their opening eight fixtures. Kenneth Taylor opened the scoring for the hosts, and a Diego Carlos own goal doubled the lead before Simone Lontani’s late consolation for Parma.

Elsewhere, Como continued their impressive form following their midweek Champions League success against Manchester United. Cesc Fabregas’s side moved into fourth place after a 2-0 win over Sassuolo, fueled by an Anastasios Douvikas brace. The Greek forward has now netted eight goals in all competitions this season, helping Como maintain pressure on the league leaders as they look to build on their historic European qualification from last term.
