Navigating the AITA Constitutional Requirements
Under Rule 12 (B) of the amended AITA constitution, eligibility to contest for the posts of President, Secretary General, or Treasurer is strictly defined. A candidate must either be an SOM General Body representative, have served at least one full term on the AITA Executive Committee, or have previously held a top office-bearer position within a state affiliate unit. Because Paes is currently ineligible to contest as a state representative, his failure to enter the SOM election leaves him unable to pursue the presidency in the November 27 polls.
Reflecting on his decision to run, Mahesh Bhupathi emphasized the importance of high-level athlete involvement in sports governance. Citing the impact of P. Gopichand on badminton, Bhupathi noted that federations benefit significantly from the expertise of those who have competed at the highest levels. Bhupathi and Sania Mirza, both former world number one doubles players and multiple-time Grand Slam champions, are among eight total candidates vying for the SOM spots.
A Competitive Field for Governance Roles
The field of candidates includes former players Ankita Bhambri, Ashutosh Singh, Gaurav Natekar, Janaki Krishnamoorthy, Shalini Thakur Chawla, and current Billie Jean King Cup captain Vishal Uppal. The Executive Committee list specifically features five nominees: Bhupathi, Sania, Ankita, Janaki, and Uppal. For his part, Uppal expressed a commitment to addressing the ground realities of the sport, stating his intention to engage with stakeholders to foster growth and necessary change within the national federation.
The current AITA framework provides for four SOM representatives on the General Body—comprising two men and two women—and two SOM representatives on the 15-member Executive Committee, split equally by gender. This structure is part of a broader initiative to integrate former athletes into the governance of national sports federations, aligning with updated sports governance regulations.
