Ongoing rescue efforts and casualty reports
The tribute occurred against the backdrop of a deepening crisis in Nepal, where rescue operations remain in full swing. According to data provided by the Nepal Police as of 3 PM on Sunday, the confirmed death toll has reached 788. The fatalities are spread across several districts, with Chitwan recording the highest number of deaths at 264, followed by Nawalparasi East with 194 and Nawalparasi West with 120. Other affected areas include Gorkha, Nuwakot, Dhading, Tanahun, and Rasuwa.
The National Disaster Risk Reduction & Management Authority (NDRRMA) reported that 2,502 individuals remain missing. Among those unaccounted for are 933 workers from regional hydropower projects, 592 foreign nationals, and 127 Nepali citizens travelling with foreign groups. The missing list also includes personnel from the Nepal Army, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and various government offices. While 239 people have received medical treatment for injuries, authorities are currently working to identify bodies stored across 21 hospitals nationwide.
Scale of the emergency response
A massive relief operation is currently underway, involving nearly 20,000 security personnel on the ground. These efforts have resulted in 8,730 rescues by ground forces, while air crews have completed 363 helicopter flights to airlift 3,081 people to safety. Notably, rescue teams successfully extracted 279 individuals from a flooded hydropower tunnel.
The Government of Nepal has initiated financial support, disbursing emergency funds to local governments, including NPR 10 million each to Rasuwa and Nuwakot, and NPR 5 million to Dhading. Relief supplies, including food and communication equipment, are being transported to isolated communities like Uttargaya and Dhunche via a combination of road transport and dedicated helicopter flights to ensure aid reaches those in need.
