Lyon and Paris FC Gain Ground on PSG in Ligue 1 Title Race

Lyon and Paris FC both secured vital victories on Sunday, moving closer to defending champions Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the Ligue 1 standings. The results keep the pressure on the league leaders, who maintained their position at the summit following a dominant 5-1 win over Le Havre on Friday.

Lyon responded to their recent defeat against PSG with a clinical 2-0 home victory against Angers. Ernest Nuamah opened the scoring, and captain Corentin Tolisso added a second to ensure the three points. The win leaves the seven-time French champions in third place, trailing PSG by three points and sitting just one point behind second-placed Lille. The match was marked by an emotional atmosphere, as head coach Paulo Fonseca appeared in tears while embracing his staff at the final whistle. Addressing his future amid reports linking him to a return to Portugal, Fonseca stated that while he expects to be with the squad on Monday, he could not confirm his long-term status.

At the Stade Jean-Bouin, Paris FC continued their impressive campaign by defeating Monaco 3-1. The victory leaves the club, backed by the Arnault family, level on points with Lyon, trailing only on goal difference. Malian international Lassine Sinayoko proved the difference in the first half, netting twice to put the hosts in control.

Monaco introduced Folarin Balogun at the interval, and the United States forward made an immediate impact by scoring his first goal of the season in the 65th minute. Despite the goal, Monaco’s hopes of a comeback were extinguished shortly after when Pablo Pagis restored the two-goal cushion for Paris FC. The result marks Monaco’s fourth consecutive match without a win in the league.

Elsewhere in the division, Strasbourg snapped a four-game losing streak with a resounding 5-1 victory over Auxerre. Moroccan international Gessime Yassine was instrumental in the win, contributing two goals, winning a penalty, and providing an assist. Cameron Archer scored the lone goal for Auxerre, marking his sixth strike in seven appearances since joining on loan from Southampton. The weekend’s action also saw Lille edge out northern rivals Lens 1-0 on Friday, courtesy of a late strike from 40-year-old Olivier Giroud.
