New Zealand hit by double injury blow ahead of India ODI series

New Zealand’s preparations for the upcoming ODI series against India have been dealt a significant blow, with key players Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra ruled out due to ongoing fitness concerns. The pair will miss the entire series as they continue their respective rehabilitation programs, forcing selectors to make late adjustments to the squad.

Chapman is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, with MRI scans indicating that he requires at least another two weeks of recovery before returning to full fitness. Meanwhile, Ravindra has been unable to overcome a shoulder issue, with team management opting for caution to ensure he is available for the upcoming Test series later this month.

Squad reshuffle and new inclusions

In response to the absences, the New Zealand selectors have called up Henry Nicholls and Dean Foxcroft to bolster the ranks. Nicholls, who recently struck a century—his 13th in List A cricket—during a 119-run performance for Canterbury against the Wellington Firebirds, will join the squad for the opening three matches of the series.

Foxcroft is set to link up with the team for the final two ODIs following the conclusion of his red-ball commitments with New Zealand A. Additionally, Tim Seifert, who was initially slated for only the latter half of the series, will now remain with the group for the duration of the five-match contest. Matt Fisher has also been retained as an extra bowling option for the entire series, while Matt Henry is scheduled to join the squad on Monday, pending a final assessment of his fitness.

Coach reflects on selection changes

New Zealand head coach Rob Walter expressed his disappointment regarding the loss of Chapman and Ravindra, acknowledging their value to the side. Walter noted that while the players are frustrated to be missing out, the decision was made to avoid any unnecessary risks ahead of the upcoming Test schedule.

The squad is set to assemble in Auckland this coming Monday to begin final preparations for the first ODI, which is scheduled to take place at Eden Park on Wednesday. The updated roster features Mitchell Santner as captain for the duration of the series, with a mix of experienced campaigners and new faces tasked with taking on the Indian side.
