Liverpool and Manchester City Advance to League Cup Quarter-Finals After Penalty Shoot-Outs

Liverpool secured their place in the League Cup quarter-finals after a tense penalty shoot-out victory over Chelsea at Anfield. The match, which ended 1-1 after regulation time, saw both sides trade penalties in the first half, with Morgan Rogers putting Chelsea ahead from the spot before Cody Gakpo equalised for the hosts just before the interval.

The shoot-out proved equally dramatic, featuring missed opportunities from both teams. After Chelsea's Valentin Barco struck the post and Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas fired over, the contest remained on a knife-edge. Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili eventually provided the decisive moment by saving Emmanuel Emegha’s penalty, allowing Joe Gomez to score and Wesley Fofana to miss, ultimately sending the 10-time winners through to the next round.

Manchester City Survive Brighton Scare

Holders Manchester City were pushed to their limits at the Etihad Stadium, requiring a penalty shoot-out to overcome a resilient Brighton side after a 2-2 draw. Despite making nine changes to his starting lineup, City manager Enzo Maresca saw his side fall behind twice to goals from Malick Yalcouye and Georginio Rutter. Mateo Kovacic and Vitor Reis provided the equalisers for the hosts to force the game into penalties.

In the shoot-out, City goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli emerged as the hero, denying both Yasin Ayari and Lewis Dunk to secure a quarter-final berth. City are now set to face third-tier Bradford in the next stage of the competition, while Liverpool will take on Bournemouth.

Elsewhere in the competition, Bournemouth continued their impressive form with a 3-0 victory over Aston Villa, while Crystal Palace eased pressure on manager Pierre Sage with a 1-0 win at Fulham. Sunderland also progressed to the quarter-finals after a 3-2 victory against Brentford. The remaining spots in the final eight were highlighted by fourth-tier Fleetwood, who eliminated Premier League champions Arsenal on Tuesday, and they now await the winner of the Everton versus Newcastle tie.
