Lionel Scaloni Addresses Team's Performance as Argentina Prepares for Semifinals

Argentina's head coach, Lionel Scaloni, has dismissed recent criticisms regarding his team's performances in the ongoing FIFA World Cup 2026, asserting that the defending champions have rightfully secured their spot in the semi-finals. The Argentine squad is set to face England in a highly anticipated match in Atlanta on Wednesday, with the victor advancing to the final against Spain at the New York New Jersey Stadium on July 19.

Scaloni Defends Team's Performance

In the lead-up to the crucial clash, Scaloni addressed concerns about Argentina's form, despite the team boasting an impressive record of six consecutive victories. "The team isn't playing as poorly as some suggest. We must have done something right to reach this stage," he stated, emphasizing the importance of their journey to the semi-finals.

Scaloni expressed gratitude towards his players for their contributions, which have led to three titles and now another opportunity to compete for glory. "We're just one step away, and we're going to give it our all to get there," he added, highlighting the team's determination.

Argentina topped Group J with wins against Algeria, Austria, and Jordan, before navigating through the knockout stages with victories over Cape Verde, Egypt, and Switzerland. Notably, the team showcased resilience by coming back from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Egypt in the Round of 16, although they required extra time to overcome both Cape Verde and Switzerland.

Focus on Results Over Style

Scaloni acknowledged that at this stage of the tournament, the style of play is less significant than the results. "Honestly, I don't dwell on whether we're playing exactly how I envisioned. A month and a half ago, I would have jumped at the chance to be in a World Cup semi-final, regardless of how we got here," he remarked.

He further emphasized the team's readiness, stating, "It doesn't matter to me if we're tired or not. We're in a World Cup semi-final, and I'm incredibly excited. We are all happy and prepared for the match." This semi-final marks Argentina's fourth consecutive appearance at this stage, following their runs in 2014, 2018, and their victorious campaign in Qatar in 2022.

As the match approaches, Scaloni also addressed the historical context of the rivalry between Argentina and England, particularly referencing the 1982 Falklands War. He insisted that such political history should not overshadow the sporting event. "This is a football match. I can't mix things up, especially out of respect for what happened so many years ago," he stated, reinforcing the notion that the focus should remain on the game itself.

England, on the other hand, reached the semi-finals after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Norway in the quarter-finals. Thomas Tuchel's squad is eager to secure their first World Cup final appearance since their triumph in 1966, while Argentina aims to extend their remarkable 12-match winning streak in World Cup play and take a significant step toward defending their title.
