The controversy stems from a post made by the 64-year-old league chief on the social media platform X on October 16. In his message, Tebas criticised Real Madrid’s in-house television channel for its recurring segments that suggest referees are actively working to prevent the club from securing victories. He explicitly likened these tactics to the propaganda mechanisms utilized by the Nazi official, a remark that has now triggered a formal legal assessment regarding his conduct.
Regulatory Scrutiny and Official Stance
The TAD is tasked with determining if the remarks violate Spain’s 1990 Sports Law, specifically the provision concerning public acts that damage the dignity or decorum of the sport. In its official statement, the CSD emphasised the importance of maintaining an environment defined by respect, coexistence, and fair play, suggesting that such comparisons fall outside the expected standards for a league official.
Real Madrid, who have frequently used their media channels to challenge officiating decisions, responded to the incident by calling for the president's resignation. The club has previously described the Spanish refereeing system as being rigged and discredited, a stance that has been a point of contention between the league administration and the club for some time.
Tebas Defends His Position
Following the backlash, Tebas has attempted to clarify his original statement. He maintained that his intention was to highlight specific propaganda techniques rather than to draw any parallels with Nazi ideology. In a follow-up post on X, he reiterated this distinction, arguing that his comments were focused on the methodology of the club's communication strategy.
Tebas also questioned the scope of the current investigation, challenging why the club’s ongoing accusations of corruption against the refereeing system have not faced similar scrutiny regarding sporting dignity. He argued that such accusations negatively impact referees, other clubs, and the broader fan base, suggesting that the values of the sport should be defended against all forms of public attack.
