Former Barcelona president Joan Gaspart has issued a stern warning to Lionel Messi, urging the legendary forward to stop delaying his official farewell tribute at the Camp Nou. Gaspart, who was instrumental in bringing a 13-year-old Messi to the club, expressed growing frustration over the Argentine’s apparent reluctance to return for a formal send-off following his departure in 2021.

The relationship between Messi and the current Barcelona hierarchy, specifically president Joan Laporta, has been the subject of intense speculation since the player's exit. However, Gaspart insists that personal grievances should not overshadow the necessity of a proper goodbye to the supporters who cheered him on for over two decades.

Gaspart Warns Messi Against Setting Conditions

Addressing the ongoing situation, Gaspart emphasised that while he maintains a deep affection for the player he signed, the stature of the football club must remain the priority. He cautioned that Messi should be mindful of his actions, suggesting that the player’s success is inextricably linked to his time in Catalonia.

“Leo is an undeniable footballer, the best in the world, and a great player. There is only one thing he must not forget: Barcelona is bigger than him, and he should be careful,” Gaspart stated. He added that while he is currently allowing a grace period for the situation to resolve, his patience is not infinite.

The former president was particularly critical of the notion that Messi might be waiting for a change in club leadership before agreeing to a tribute. Gaspart dismissed the idea that the player should be allowed to dictate terms based on who occupies the presidential office.

“Whoever the president may be, he must come and say goodbye to Barca. If Leo Messi only comes to say goodbye the day Laporta is no longer here, and refuses to come because Laporta is the president, I wouldn't give him a tribute. Who does he think he is? To make coming to Barcelona conditional on whether Laporta is there or not,” Gaspart remarked.
