“We have pulled out of the FIFA ASEAN Cup since we can't play both Brazil and the FIFA ASEAN Cup,” Satyanarayanan explained to PTI. This withdrawal means that India will miss the chance to compete against some of the top teams from Southeast Asia in this newly established tournament.
Scheduling Conflicts and Tournament Details
The FIFA ASEAN Cup was designed as a new international competition for teams within the ASEAN region, with India invited as a non-ASEAN participant. Initially, India accepted FIFA's invitation and was placed in Division 1 Group A, alongside Indonesia, Malaysia, and Singapore. The tournament is set to take place during the FIFA international window from September 21 to October 6.
However, the match against Brazil, scheduled for October 3 at Kolkata's Salt Lake Stadium, created a conflict that the AIFF could not resolve. Although there were discussions about sending a separate or developmental squad to the ASEAN Cup, the federation ultimately decided to withdraw entirely and focus on securing friendly matches during the international window.
Future Friendlies and Media Rights Developments
In addition to the match against Brazil, reports indicate that India is considering friendly matches against teams that participated in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Cabo Verde and Iran being potential opponents. However, these fixtures have yet to be officially confirmed by the AIFF.
This decision marks a notable shift from earlier plans, as the AIFF had previously accepted FIFA's invitation and signed a participation agreement. India's national team has faced challenges in securing regular high-quality competition, especially after failing to qualify for the 2027 AFC Asian Cup.
In a separate development, it has been reported that only one bid was submitted for the media rights of the Indian Super League (ISL), which is set to commence on September 4. The deadline for submissions ended on August 12, and the sole bidder is believed to be a digital streaming platform without a linear television channel. The AIFF and ISL clubs will need to address this situation, as traditional television broadcasts are crucial for maintaining fan engagement in the league.
Previously, the media rights holder for the ISL 2025-26 season, FanCode, had sub-licensed linear TV broadcast rights to Sony Pictures Networks India while retaining exclusive digital streaming rights. The AIFF had issued a Request for Proposal for the ISL 2026-27 media rights on July 25, following an agreement with participating teams to adopt a club-led model for two years, extendable to four, while the national federation retains administrative and regulatory oversight.
