Villarreal secured a dramatic 2-1 comeback victory against Valencia at the Mestalla Stadium, with Georges Mikautadze netting the decisive goal deep into stoppage time. The result provides a significant boost for the visitors, lifting them into mid-table, while leaving Javier Aguirre’s Valencia side languishing in 19th place and firmly within the relegation zone.

The match was defined by intense rivalry and disciplinary issues, as both teams were reduced to ten men before the final whistle. Valencia initially took control of the contest when Pepelu converted from the penalty spot during the first half. However, Villarreal responded in the 69th minute as American defender Alex Freeman rose highest to head home the equalizer, setting the stage for a tense finish.

A Chaotic Finale at the Mestalla

The encounter turned increasingly volatile in the second half. Villarreal were forced to play with a numerical disadvantage after Pape Gueye was shown a red card for an elbow on Jose Gaya. The numerical parity was restored shortly after, however, when Valencia midfielder Harvey Elliott, currently on loan from Liverpool, was dismissed following two rapid yellow cards for dissent.

With the game appearing destined for a draw, Mikautadze capitalized on the space created in the final moments. The striker broke through the Valencia defense in stoppage time and delivered a clinical finish to snatch all three points for Inigo Perez’s side. The result leaves Valencia facing mounting pressure at the bottom of the table, while Villarreal celebrates a hard-fought derby success.

The weekend’s La Liga action continues with Atletico Madrid hosting Deportivo La Coruna later on Saturday. Attention will then shift to Sunday, when league leaders Barcelona prepare to host Jose Mourinho’s Real Madrid at the Camp Nou for the latest edition of El Clasico.
