Diego Forlan Urges India to Prioritize Grassroots Football Development

Former Uruguay star Diego Forlan has identified a clear path forward for Indian football, emphasizing that the nation must prioritize grassroots development and consistent exposure to elite international competition to elevate its standing on the global stage. Now serving as the head coach of the Uruguay national team, Forlan returned to India ahead of an international friendly at the Salt Lake Stadium, reflecting on the country's unique sporting landscape.

Forlan, who previously competed in the Indian Super League with Mumbai City in 2016, acknowledged the dominance of cricket in India but remains optimistic about the potential of local talent. He stressed that while the football culture differs significantly from his home country, the fundamental requirement for progress remains the same: building a robust foundation from the ground up through academies and increased participation among the youth.

Building a Sustainable Football Future

The 2010 World Cup Golden Ball winner argued that the development of young players is intrinsically linked to the strength of the domestic league and the quality of opposition they face. According to Forlan, organizing high-profile fixtures against established footballing nations like Brazil and Uruguay provides invaluable experience that will eventually allow India to compete in more significant matches on the international calendar.

Forlan noted that the process of nurturing attacking talent requires patience and a long-term commitment to infrastructure. By expanding the network of academies and ensuring that children have ample opportunities to play, the overall quality of the league will naturally improve. He expressed confidence that these structural investments would inevitably lead to the production of higher-caliber players capable of making an impact.

Respecting the Opposition

Ahead of the upcoming friendly, Forlan warned his squad against underestimating the Indian side. Having observed India’s recent performance against Brazil, where the hosts held their own for a significant portion of the match before eventually falling to a 4-0 defeat, the coach highlighted the technical ability present in the Indian ranks. He pointed out that if given sufficient time and space, Indian players have demonstrated the capacity to create dangerous combinations and execute effective long-ball strategies.

The Uruguayan manager also highlighted the environmental challenges, noting that the humidity in India requires careful adaptation for his players. Recalling his time playing in cities like Mumbai, Kerala, and Goa, Forlan spoke fondly of the passionate atmosphere he encountered in stadiums across the country. He remains focused on the task at hand, viewing the current series of friendlies as a vital learning curve for the Indian national team as they continue their development journey.
