The Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has officially suspended
Ronaldo, 41, left the squad on September 30 after expressing frustration regarding his playing time. The incident followed a match against Norway on September 27, where the forward was instructed to warm up but was ultimately not utilized as a substitute. Tensions reportedly escalated when he learned he would not be in the starting lineup for the subsequent fixture against Denmark on October 1.
Disciplinary outcome and team impact
The FPF disciplinary committee confirmed that the 30-day penalty represents the minimum sanction allowed under federation regulations, which permit suspensions ranging from one to six months for players who leave the national camp prematurely. In determining the length of the ban, the committee noted that they considered the public apology issued by the player on October 6, in which he acknowledged his error and stated his readiness to accept the consequences.
Because the suspension was backdated to the day of the Denmark match, Ronaldo has already served 19 days of the ban. He is expected to complete the remainder of the suspension by the end of October. Despite the controversy, the national team has maintained a strong performance in the tournament, securing victories in all four of their Nations League matches to qualify for the quarter-finals with two games remaining in the group stage.
Portugal is scheduled to host Denmark on November 14 before traveling to face Wales on November 17 for their final Group A4 fixtures. By the time these matches take place, the suspension will have concluded, making the record-holding goalscorer available for selection once again. Ronaldo, a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, remains the most capped player in the nation's history.
