A delegation from the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) arrived in Kolkata on Thursday to conduct a thorough inspection of the
Joining Oliveira were Vinicius Barrozo Costa, Administrator; José Vitor Senatore de Paula Lima, Marketing and Operations Manager; Guilherme Passos Ramos, Physiologist; and Bruno Mazzei Reis, Security. The delegation began their visit by reviewing hospitality arrangements before arriving at the stadium around 5 PM, accompanied by Subrata Paul, Director of Football for the All India Football Federation (AIFF) and a former Indian goalkeeper.
Inspection Highlights
Upon their arrival at the stadium, the CBF officials were welcomed by West Bengal's Sports Minister, Dr. Indranil Khan, who referred to the venue as the "Mecca of Indian football." The delegation first inspected the training facilities, spending approximately 15 minutes there before moving on to the main stadium. They meticulously examined the playing surface, inquiring about the last time the grass was replaced, and assessed the changing rooms and sanitation facilities, which were noted as key concerns.
Dr. Khan later addressed the media, expressing satisfaction with the CBF's feedback. "After reviewing our infrastructure and preparations, they are quite positive," he stated. He emphasized the excitement surrounding the upcoming match, which coincides with the festive season of Mahalaya, and mentioned that a tentative schedule for completing necessary work had been shared with the Brazilian officials.
Looking Ahead
The Salt Lake Stadium is currently hosting the Durand Cup, and the CBF has requested updates on the condition of the pitch following the tournament. The Brazilian delegation may return for a final inspection if deemed necessary. This visit comes in the wake of a previous incident in December 2022, when crowd mismanagement led to vandalism at the stadium. Dr. Khan reassured that the ongoing Durand Cup has demonstrated effective logistical management, alleviating security concerns.
Brazil, the five-time World Cup champions, are expected to arrive with a contingent of 90 players, coaches, and support staff. They have also requested ice-bath facilities in the dressing room, which are currently unavailable at the stadium. The match against Brazil will mark a significant milestone for Indian football, as it will be the highest-ranked opponent India has faced since the FIFA rankings were established in 1992.
In addition to the Brazil match, there are discussions about hosting Cape Verde in India shortly after, with Kolkata and Kochi being considered as potential venues. Dr. Khan remarked, "Let's see," regarding the proposed fixture, indicating ongoing deliberations.
