Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma sharpen focus in intense Auckland training session

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma stepped up their preparations for the upcoming ODI series with an intensive training session at Eden Park in Auckland. Under clear skies and pleasant conditions, the two senior batters utilized the centre wicket to fine-tune their technique against a group of local bowlers, including Auqib Nabi, Gurnoor Brar, and Anshul Kamboj.

The session proved to be a demanding test for the duo, as the bowlers maintained consistent lines and lengths throughout the morning. Nabi, who has been included in the squad for the first three ODIs, utilized the breeze to generate movement away from the right-handers, frequently challenging the outside edges of both Kohli and Sharma. While Brar and Kamboj provided relentless support from the opposite end, the session offered a productive environment for the Indian stalwarts to adjust to the conditions.

Focus on technique and high-intensity drills

Throughout the practice, Kohli displayed a clear focus on intent, frequently looking to play his trademark cover drives and whips through the mid-wicket region. Despite some early frustration with edges, the former captain remained aggressive, eventually concluding his session with a series of high-intensity sprints after placing cones on the field. His commitment was evident as he requested an additional period of batting practice even after his primary session had concluded, during which he showcased a range of shots including pulls, cuts, and lofted drives.

Rohit Sharma, meanwhile, navigated a more measured start, showing caution outside the off-stump while remaining comfortable when playing deliveries off his pads. During a brief break, the captain shared a lighthearted moment with local cricketers, engaging in a conversation about popular music trends before posing for photographs. The session also saw KL Rahul and Ruturaj Gaikwad participate in an extended training block, splitting their time between the nets and the centre wicket.

Squad updates and support staff presence

While the senior pair and other squad members focused on their batting, India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill was absent from the field, having been scheduled for a gym session during that time. The training was overseen by members of the support staff, including spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule and fielding coach Shubhadeep Ghosh, alongside Dayanand Garani and Nuwan Seneviratne. The remainder of the Indian squad continued their commitments with the T20I team in Hamilton.
