Virat Kohli has further cemented his legacy as one of the most prolific batters in the history of one-day international cricket. During the opening match of the five-game series against New Zealand at Eden Park in Auckland, the former India captain reached a significant career milestone, becoming the first player to amass 13,000 runs while batting at the No. 3 position.

This achievement places Kohli in an elite category of run-scorers. While Sachin Tendulkar previously crossed the 13,000-run threshold at a single batting position, he did so while opening the innings at No. 2, where he accumulated 13,685 runs. Kohli’s accomplishment at the first-drop position highlights his sustained dominance and consistency in the middle order over the course of his career.

A Statistical Masterclass at No. 3

Kohli’s record at the No. 3 spot is defined by an exceptional average of 61.61, a figure that underscores his ability to anchor innings and accelerate when required. By reaching the 13,000-run mark, he has moved ahead of several legendary figures who have occupied the position for their respective nations.

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting currently sits in second place on the list, having scored 12,662 runs at an average of 42.48. Sri Lankan icon Kumar Sangakkara follows in third with 9,747 runs at 44.71. The top five is rounded out by South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis, who tallied 7,774 runs, and New Zealand’s Kane Williamson, who has recorded 6,504 runs at the position. Other notable batters in the top seven include Babar Azam and Joe Root.

India Dominates Series Opener

The milestone occurred on a productive day for the Indian side, who delivered a clinical performance after captain Shubman Gill won the toss and elected to field first. The Indian bowling attack dismantled the New Zealand lineup, restricting the hosts to a total of 185 all out in 40.2 overs.

Arshdeep Singh spearheaded the bowling effort with a four-wicket haul, while Gurnoor Brar provided excellent support by claiming three wickets. Anshul Kamboj also contributed significantly, taking two wickets. Kohli’s impact extended beyond his batting; he showcased his athleticism in the field by taking a spectacular one-handed catch to dismiss Nathan Smith off the bowling of Kamboj. The match marked the return of Kohli, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul to the Indian ODI playing XI for the start of the five-match series.
