Anshul Kamboj delivers clinical performance in India's ODI victory over New Zealand

Anshul Kamboj silenced his critics with a commanding display of fast bowling in the ODI series opener against New Zealand at Eden Park. The 25-year-old Haryana seamer, who has faced a turbulent introduction to international cricket, proved instrumental in dismantling the hosts' batting lineup through a combination of relentless accuracy and sharp pace.

Kamboj’s performance was the result of a deliberate and structured preparation period. Unlike his previous international call-ups, which were often marked by last-minute travel and abrupt format changes, this outing followed a week of focused training in Auckland. By working closely with the team management and spending time in the nets against senior batters like Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, Kamboj entered the match with the confidence and clarity that had previously eluded him.

A disciplined approach to the crease

From the outset, Kamboj maintained a disciplined line and length, utilizing the wobble seam to trouble the New Zealand batters. His initial spell of 5-1-12-0 set the tone for the Indian attack, effectively stifling the scoring rate and building pressure that allowed teammates Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh to capitalize from the opposite end. By the time he concluded his opening stint, nearly half of the New Zealand side had been dismissed, leaving the hosts struggling to build a competitive total.

The bowler’s persistence was rewarded in his second spell, where he increased his intensity and consistently clocked speeds near the 140 kmph mark. He claimed the wickets of Mitchell Santner and Nathan Smith in consecutive overs, effectively ending any hopes of a lower-order recovery for the Black Caps. Reflecting on his success, Kamboj noted that the preparation provided him with the necessary confidence to execute his plans without being unsettled by the opposition's tactics.

Management backing pays dividends

The decision to persist with Kamboj despite earlier struggles in Test and ODI formats has been a key theme for the Indian team management. Following a difficult outing against the West Indies in Guwahati, captain Shubman Gill publicly backed the young quick, emphasizing his long-term value to the squad, particularly his ability to contribute with the bat at number eight. This consistent support, combined with a more methodical approach to his training, has allowed the bowler to find his rhythm at the highest level.

Addressing the media after the match, Kamboj remained grounded, stating that he does not pay attention to external criticism. Instead, he focused on the lessons learned from his previous appearances, including the Manchester Test. With this performance in Auckland, the seamer has demonstrated the growth the selectors were looking for, solidifying his position in the current ODI setup as the team looks ahead to the remainder of the series.
