The 28-year-old’s decisive spell on the final day proved instrumental in dismantling the Haryana batting lineup. Having already taken three for 70 in the first innings, Kotian’s second-innings haul secured his first-ever 10-wicket match return. His efforts were complemented by a solid batting display earlier in the match, where he contributed his 20th first-class half-century.
Refining skills through elite guidance
Reflecting on his development, Kotian credited his recent progress to a combination of technical adjustments and mentorship. The spinner has been working closely with coaches including Sunil Joshi, Jatin Paranjape, and his long-time mentor Rajesh Sanil. His recent experience traveling with the Indian squad for the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia also provided him with invaluable insights from bowling coach Morne Morkel and Australian spin veteran Nathan Lyon.
Kotian noted that his time in Australia helped him refine his use of over-spin, particularly on surfaces with extra bounce. Back in domestic conditions, he has focused on increasing his accuracy and experimenting with different angles around the crease. By alternating between bowling over and around the wicket, he has successfully created doubt in the minds of batters, a strategy he believes has been central to his recent success.
Focusing on consistency and team goals
Despite the growing competition for national selection, Kotian remains focused on his immediate responsibilities with Mumbai. He emphasized that his primary goal is to maintain his rhythm and provide his captain with the confidence that he can shoulder a heavy workload, having bowled 65.3 overs across the match in challenging heat and humidity.
Looking ahead, the spinner is committed to continuing his dual-role contribution. While he is pleased with his bowling accuracy, he is also working to further improve his lower-order batting. Kotian remains indifferent to external comparisons, stating that his focus is purely on performing consistently whenever he takes the field, whether for Mumbai, in the Irani Cup, or the Duleep Trophy.
