Alexander Zverev Set to Reach World No. 1 Ranking After Vienna Open Victory

Alexander Zverev is poised to ascend to the pinnacle of men’s tennis, with the German confirmed to reach the world number one ranking for the first time in his career. The 29-year-old secured this milestone following a straight-sets victory over Tallon Griekspoor in the second round of the Vienna Open on Thursday.

The 6-4, 7-5 win in the Austrian capital ensured Zverev’s rise to the top of the ATP standings, which will be officially reflected in next week’s update. While Zverev had already secured a year-end finish at the top of the rankings, the withdrawal of current world number one Jannik Sinner due to a knee injury accelerated his path to the summit.

A Career-Defining Milestone for Zverev

Reflecting on the achievement, Zverev described the sensation as unique compared to typical tournament victories. He noted that seeing the number one designation next to his name in the upcoming rankings is a special feeling. This rise to the top follows a standout 2026 season for the Hamburg-born player, highlighted by his maiden Grand Slam titles at both the French Open and the US Open.

Zverev will become the 30th man to hold the top ranking since the system was introduced in 1973. At 29 years and 196 days old, he will be the second-oldest player to achieve the feat for the first time, trailing only Australia’s John Newcombe.

Securing the Spot in Vienna

The path to the quarter-finals in Vienna required resilience. Earlier in the week, Zverev survived a challenging opening-round match against Martin Landaluce, where he saved four match points. His performance against Griekspoor proved more clinical, as he broke serve in the opening game to establish early momentum.

The second set remained competitive until 5-5, when Zverev managed a decisive break of serve. The match concluded with a minor delay after a powerful smash from the German damaged an electronic advertising board. Once the umpire addressed the issue, Zverev sealed the victory with an unreturnable serve. He now advances to the quarter-finals, maintaining his momentum ahead of the upcoming ATP Finals.
