Suresh Raina Criticises IPL Impact Player Rule for Marginalising Bowlers

Former India international Suresh Raina has joined the growing chorus of voices questioning the impact of the Indian Premier League's (IPL) Impact Player rule. The four-time IPL champion believes the regulation, introduced in 2023, has fundamentally shifted the balance of the game, leaving bowlers with limited influence in an era of increasingly high scores.

Raina’s comments add to a broader debate involving high-profile figures such as Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who have also expressed reservations about the rule during the 2024 season. The regulation permits teams to name five substitutes at the toss, allowing one to be introduced as an 'Impact Player' at any stage of the match, a feature that Raina argues has significantly bolstered batting depth at the expense of bowling competitiveness.

Speaking to former teammate Aakash Chopra, Raina argued that the rule removes the pressure on batting lineups, as teams can effectively mitigate the loss of a wicket by introducing a specialist batter. He noted that while the entertainment value is clear, the current structure leaves bowlers with few defensive options. He questioned the long-term development of players under this system, pointing out that the rule does not exist in international tournaments like the World Cup.

Raina explained that the rapid growth of the IPL has rendered the need for overseas exposure redundant. He observed that the tournament has become a global powerhouse, attracting top international talent, while the quality of some foreign leagues has seen a decline. According to the former batter, the strength of the current Indian setup and the dominance of the IPL mean that players no longer need to look abroad to test their skills, concluding that India is currently setting the standard for world cricket.
