Dinusha’s current form follows an impressive start to his Test career against the Indian side, having previously posted scores of 100 and 84. By maintaining this level of consistency, he joins West Indies icon Everton Weekes, who accomplished the feat in 1948, and Pakistan legend Zaheer Abbas, who was the last to do so in 1978. While Weekes famously extended his streak to four consecutive centuries against India, Dinusha’s current run has already established him as a significant challenge for the Indian bowling attack.

Beyond the raw run totals, Dinusha has distinguished himself through his exceptional proficiency against spin bowling. Throughout the ongoing series, he has accumulated 106 runs specifically through sweep shots—including conventional, slog, and reverse sweeps. This tally marks the highest total by any batter against spin in a Test series since ball-by-ball data tracking began in 2007. His aggressive approach is further highlighted by his strike rate of 169.44 when playing the sweep, a shot that has yielded 11 fours and four sixes without resulting in his dismissal.
This tactical dominance has been a vital asset for Sri Lanka as they look to stabilize their innings. Of his total 284 runs against spin in his nascent Test career, an impressive 42.95 percent have been derived from sweep variations. This performance places him in elite company, with only players like Joe Root and Ben Duckett having recorded higher totals of sweep-shot runs in recent years.
Resilience Against the Indian Attack
The third day of the second Test saw Dinusha anchor the Sri Lankan lower order after the hosts resumed the final session at 216 for seven. Despite India’s efforts to dismantle the tail, Dinusha remained at the crease for 201 minutes, providing a crucial buffer for his side. He shared a 57-run partnership with Keshara Nuwantha for the eighth wicket and followed it with an unbroken 35-run stand alongside Lahiru Kumara, who held firm for 65 minutes.
Earlier in the day, India had made significant inroads by claiming four wickets for 86 runs during the middle session. Manav Suthar, Ravindra Jadeja, and Mohammed Siraj were among the successful bowlers, removing Dhananjaya de Silva, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, and Niroshan Dickwella respectively. Despite these setbacks, Dinusha’s persistence has kept Sri Lanka in the contest at 265 for eight. The hosts currently trail India’s first-innings total of 503 for nine by 238 runs and require another 38 runs to avoid the follow-on.
