A Platform for Empowerment and Leadership
Reflecting on her new responsibilities, Mandhana expressed her commitment to the cause, emphasizing that her own path in professional sports was shaped by the opportunities she received. She noted that with determination and the right encouragement, young people can achieve extraordinary results, asserting that every child deserves the chance to dream big and fulfill their potential.
UNICEF India Representative Cynthia McCaffrey praised the appointment, highlighting Mandhana’s transition from an aspiring athlete to a global icon as a powerful example for the next generation. McCaffrey stated that investing in the leadership and rights of girls is a vital step for the country, particularly given that India currently hosts the world’s largest population of children and young people.
Building on a Decorated Sporting Career
Mandhana’s appointment arrives during a period of significant professional milestones. Earlier this week, she was named captain of the Indian women’s cricket team following the departure of Harmanpreet Kaur. Her leadership credentials are supported by an impressive track record, including being an Arjuna Award recipient and a key member of the squad that secured India’s first-ever ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup title in 2025.
Her individual performance on the field has been equally notable. In 2025, she became the first woman to surpass 1,000 ODI runs in a single calendar year, a feat highlighted by five centuries. Her momentum continued into 2026, where she finished as the leading run-scorer in both women’s international cricket and T20 internationals. Currently, she holds the position of the world’s top-ranked women’s ODI batter and is a two-time recipient of the ICC Women’s Cricketer of the Year award.
