Shubman Gill leads India's training intensity at Eden Park ahead of New Zealand series

Shubman Gill demonstrated his commitment to high-volume preparation during an intensive training session at Eden Park on Monday. The Indian captain spent nearly three hours on the field, focusing on a comprehensive workload that included an extended batting stint and specialized fielding drills under the guidance of spin-bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule.

The session, which followed a rest day for the skipper, saw Gill and KL Rahul serve as the primary batting participants. The duo engaged in a structured drill that involved alternating between batting and sprinting, ensuring they maintained a high level of physical activity throughout the morning. While fast bowlers Anshul Kamboj, Gurnoor Brar, and Auqib Nabi were rested after their previous efforts, local net bowlers provided the necessary support for the session.

Focus on preparation as senior stars opt for rest

KL Rahul began his day with wicketkeeping practice before transitioning to the nets alongside Gill. The pair drew significant attention from local fans gathered near the boundary, who were eager to engage with the players. After completing his batting routine, which featured his signature inside-out drives, Rahul concluded his session and headed to the dressing room. Gill, however, extended his training to include rigorous catching practice, covering everything from close-in slips to high catches near the boundary ropes.

The intensity of the session was notable, particularly as Gill managed a recurring neck concern with a post-workout massage before departing. His dedication to the training ground stood in contrast to the approach taken by other senior members of the squad. Virat Kohli, who was spotted briefly at the venue, focused exclusively on a gym session and did not participate in on-field drills. Similarly, Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad remained indoors, opting to save their energy for the team's collective training session scheduled for Tuesday.

The Indian squad is currently regrouping in Auckland following the conclusion of the T20I series in Hamilton. With the five-match ODI series set to commence on November 4, the upcoming full-team training session will be the final opportunity for the players to finalize their preparations. The New Zealand side is also expected to hold their own morning training session as both teams look to hit the ground running for the opening encounter.
