Shreyas Iyer Eyes Rohit Sharma's T20I Captaincy Record Against New Zealand

Shreyas Iyer stands on the brink of a significant personal milestone as India prepares for the second T20I against New Zealand at Hagley Oval in Christchurch this Saturday. Having assumed the T20I captaincy from Suryakumar Yadav in June, the middle-order batter is poised to surpass a record previously held by former skipper Rohit Sharma.

Currently, Iyer has accumulated 632 runs across 22 matches as captain throughout this calendar year. He requires just 25 additional runs in the upcoming fixture to eclipse the 656 runs Rohit managed during his 29 T20I appearances in 2022. While Rohit’s tenure was highlighted by India’s T20 World Cup victory in 2024, the global record for the most runs by a captain in a single calendar year remains with Pakistan’s Babar Azam, who tallied 939 runs in 2021. Japan’s Kendel Kadowaki-Fleming currently holds the second spot on that list with 860 runs.

Chasing Further Milestones and Squad Updates

Beyond the international record, Iyer is also tracking a broader achievement in T20 cricket. Having scored 1,130 runs as a captain across all T20 formats in 2026, he needs 96 runs in the second match to overtake Babar Azam’s 2021 benchmark of 1,225 runs as a skipper. Iyer enters this contest in good form, having contributed a brisk 42 off 28 balls during India’s successful chase of 226 in the series opener on Thursday, which resulted in a four-wicket victory.

The Indian side faces a forced change for the second encounter, however, as wicketkeeper-batter Ishan Kishan has been ruled out. Kishan sustained a right adductor strain during the first match of the series. His absence has sparked speculation regarding a potential debut for 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The young talent previously represented India at the Asian Games in Japan, where he recorded scores of 15 in the semifinal against Sri Lanka and 38 in the final against Pakistan, contributing to India’s successful gold medal campaign.
