Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli set for ODI return in New Zealand tour

Indian cricket stars Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are set for a brief hiatus from the 50-over format following the conclusion of their recent three-match ODI series against the West Indies. The series, which wrapped up on Saturday, October 3, saw the visitors secure a five-wicket victory in New Chandigarh to deny India a clean sweep.

The final match was headlined by a commanding unbeaten 162 from 143 balls by West Indies batter Shai Hope, who anchored the successful chase. Despite the loss, both Rohit and Kohli enjoyed a productive series in front of home supporters. Rohit recorded scores of 32, 101, and 92 across the three fixtures, while Kohli contributed an unbeaten 139, 29, and a golden duck.

Looking ahead to the New Zealand tour

With no further ODI fixtures scheduled for the next 30 days, the duo will return to the international stage during India’s upcoming tour of New Zealand. The tour, which encompasses five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests, is set to commence with the T20I series in Christchurch on October 22. The 50-over portion of the tour is slated to begin on November 4 at Eden Park in Auckland.

While the BCCI’s senior men’s selection committee has yet to formally announce the squad for the New Zealand trip, both Rohit and Kohli are expected to feature prominently. Their inclusion is considered vital for the world’s top-ranked ODI side, particularly given the relative lack of experience many other squad members possess in New Zealand conditions.

Statistical context for the upcoming series

Both players bring significant experience to the table as they prepare for the challenging away conditions. Rohit has previously featured in 14 ODIs in New Zealand, accumulating 437 runs across 13 innings. While he is still searching for his first ODI century in the country, he has registered four half-centuries to date.

Kohli’s record in New Zealand is similarly established, with the batter having scored 596 runs in 13 ODIs. His tally in the country includes one century and four fifties. As the team prepares for the upcoming series, the form and experience of these two senior players will be a focal point for the Indian side as they look to maintain their momentum in the 50-over format.
