Rishabh Pant makes history by surpassing Shubman Gill as India's leading run-scorer in the World Test Championship.

Rishabh Pant has made headlines with his remarkable performance during the fourth day of the Test match in Galle, propelling him to the forefront of India’s run-scorers in the World Test Championship (WTC). On Tuesday, Pant scored 66 runs off 69 balls in India’s second innings against Sri Lanka, following a contribution of 39 runs in the first innings. This impressive display has elevated his total WTC runs to 2,885, placing him 18 runs ahead of Shubman Gill, who has accumulated 2,867 runs.

In contrast, Gill faced challenges in Galle, managing scores of just 16 and 8 in his two innings. Both players have participated in 41 WTC matches, but Pant has achieved his runs in 73 innings, while Gill has taken 75 innings to reach his tally. This shift in rankings highlights Pant's growing influence in the team and his ability to perform under pressure.

Pant Joins Exclusive Club

Pant's performance in Galle was not only significant for the WTC standings but also marked a personal milestone. His second innings included two sixes, bringing his career total in Test cricket to 100 sixes. This achievement makes him the first Indian cricketer to reach this landmark and only the fourth player globally to do so. Pant entered the match with 97 Test sixes, hitting one in the first innings before achieving the milestone during his 66-run innings. He cleared the boundary against Lahiru Kumara to reach 100 sixes, with the shot also helping him secure his half-century off just 53 balls.

With his current tally of 2,885 runs in the WTC, Pant leads a list that features some of India's most celebrated Test players. Following him is Gill, with Rohit Sharma at 2,716 runs, Ravindra Jadeja at 2,632, and Virat Kohli at 2,617. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul round out the top seven with 2,543 and 2,265 runs, respectively. Pant's WTC record includes six centuries and 17 fifties, with his highest score being 146 and an average of 41.81.

Looking Ahead

While Pant has now claimed the top spot among Indian WTC run-scorers, the overall leader remains England’s Joe Root, who has amassed 6,651 runs in 77 matches. Root will have the chance to increase his tally as England prepares to face Pakistan in a three-Test series starting Wednesday at Headingley. For Pant, however, the immediate focus is on solidifying his position at the top of India's WTC batting charts, further enhancing his already illustrious Test career.
