Ali Usman makes history as the first left-arm spinner from abroad to accomplish this milestone in England in 16 years.

In a gripping encounter at Headingley, Ali Usman emerged as a pivotal figure for Pakistan, achieving a remarkable five-wicket haul. Despite his efforts, England established a substantial lead of 238 runs in the first Test match on Friday. Resuming Day 3 at 366-8, England concluded their innings at 409 runs after 89.5 overs, with their lower order contributing an additional 43 runs before the innings ended.

Usman, the standout bowler for Pakistan, recorded figures of 5 for 95 across 24 overs, marking his first five-wicket haul in England. His performance was historic, as he became the first visiting left-arm spinner to achieve this feat in England since Shakib Al Hasan in 2010. Additionally, Usman’s accomplishment made him the first visiting spinner to secure a five-wicket haul at Leeds since Ashley Mallett of Australia in 1972.

Usman's Impact on England's Batting Lineup

Usman played a crucial role in limiting England's scoring potential, dismissing key players throughout the innings. He took the wickets of Jordan Cox, who scored 73, and Harry Brook, who contributed 91 runs, along with Dan Lawrence for 51. He also claimed the wickets of Gus Atkinson and Ollie Robinson, who both fell for low scores, with Robinson being dismissed for a duck. Brook's 91 stood out as the highest score for England, while both Cox and Lawrence provided valuable support with their half-centuries.

Lower Order Contributions Propel England

England's lower order proved to be instrumental in their innings, particularly Jofra Archer, who remained not out on 23 runs from 25 balls, including two fours and a six. Jamie Smith added 25 runs before being dismissed after miscuing a pull shot off Khurram Shahzad. The final wicket fell when Josh Tongue was bowled by Khurram for 8 runs. In the bowling department for Pakistan, Khurram Shahzad finished with impressive figures of 3 for 133, while Mohammad Abbas and Mohammad Ali took one wicket each, with figures of 1 for 78 and 1 for 89, respectively. Earlier, Pakistan had struggled in their first innings, being bowled out for a mere 171 runs.
