India remains calm about Kuldeep Yadav's performance following disappointing outing in Galle.

In the wake of a subdued performance in the first Test against Sri Lanka, India's spin bowling coach Sairaj Bahutule has expressed his unwavering support for Kuldeep Yadav. Despite the left-arm wrist spinner managing only one wicket over 25 overs in Galle, Bahutule emphasized that Kuldeep remains a vital component of the team's strategy as they prepare for the second Test in Colombo.

During the match in Galle, Kuldeep's contributions were overshadowed by the impressive performances of his teammates, Ravindra Jadeja and Manav Suthar, who collectively claimed 14 wickets. Bahutule acknowledged the unique challenges Kuldeep faced in that match, attributing his limited impact to the conditions and the characteristics of the Kookaburra ball. "He has been bowling extremely well. The situation in Galle required him to take on a different role. For me, he has always been a match-winner and he definitely remains in our plans," Bahutule stated during a press conference at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.

Challenges for Wrist Spinners

Bahutule elaborated on the difficulties wrist spinners encounter, particularly when the Kookaburra ball softens. He noted that while finger spinners can more easily adjust their grip and pace, wrist spinners like Kuldeep face a tougher challenge. "All spinners struggle with a soft ball, but finger spinners can manipulate their fingers and bowl at varying speeds. For a leg-spinner, the softness of the ball makes it significantly harder," he explained.

Despite the disappointing outing, Bahutule remains optimistic about Kuldeep's potential. He pointed out that one match should not define a player's performance or approach. "Kuldeep had to adapt to the conditions and tried his best to fulfill his role. As the pitch slowed down, he was required to adjust his pace and trajectory," he said. Bahutule believes that Kuldeep was indeed executing his responsibilities as a wrist spinner, even as the match progressed and the playing surface became increasingly challenging.

Looking Ahead

As the team gears up for the next Test, Bahutule's confidence in Kuldeep's abilities is clear. He highlighted the importance of adaptability in spin bowling, especially in varying conditions. "We had to monitor how trajectory and speeds worked in each session. Kuldeep was making a concerted effort to adjust his bowling as needed," he concluded, reinforcing the notion that Kuldeep's role remains crucial for the team's success moving forward.
