Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand Reach Semifinals, Securing a Medal for India at the Badminton World Championships

In a thrilling display of resilience, India's Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand secured a spot in the semifinals of the World Championships, clinching a medal with a remarkable comeback victory over China's Jia Yi Fan and Zhang Shu Xian in the women's doubles quarterfinals on Friday. The unseeded Indian pair, who have been on a path to recovery following Treesa's injury, triumphed after an intense match lasting one hour and nine minutes, finishing with scores of 16-21, 21-15, and 21-13. This victory guarantees them at least a bronze medal, marking a significant achievement for Indian women's doubles badminton, as the last medal in this category was won in 2011 by Jwala Gutta and Ashwini Ponnappa in London.

Resilience and Comeback

With the support of a home crowd, Treesa and Gayatri turned the match around after dropping the first game. Their performance was characterized by powerful smashes and precise net play, which ultimately overwhelmed their opponents. The duo's journey to this stage has been marked by notable achievements, including reaching the semifinals of the prestigious All England Open in both 2022 and 2023. Additionally, they earned a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and broke into the top 10 rankings at the beginning of last year.

Overcoming Adversity

However, their path was not without challenges. Earlier this year, Treesa faced a significant setback when she sustained an ankle injury during training for the Asia Badminton Championships and the Uber Cup. The injury occurred when she accidentally stepped on Gayatri's foot, resulting in a severe twist of her ankle. Subsequent medical examinations revealed two high-grade muscle tears and two ligament tears, necessitating an extensive rehabilitation process. After months of recovery, the pair made their return at the Indonesia Open, followed by participation in the US Open, and recently celebrated victory at the Philippine International Challenge earlier this month.
