New Zealand secure consolation win as India clinch T20I series

New Zealand concluded their five-match T20I series against India on a high note, securing a convincing seven-wicket victory in the final encounter at Seddon Park in Hamilton. While the hosts dominated the final match, India had already done the heavy lifting earlier in the series to seal a 3-2 overall victory.

The match was defined by a clinical batting display from Tim Seifert and Glenn Phillips, who chased down India's target of 192 with 17 balls to spare. Their efforts successfully countered a spirited recovery from the Indian middle order, which had been orchestrated by Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer after an early collapse.

Milne's bowling masterclass limits India

After New Zealand captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and elected to field, his side immediately put the visitors under pressure. Adam Milne spearheaded the attack, removing Abhishek Sharma early before Sanju Samson fell for four, leaving India reeling at 19/2 in the fourth over.

Kishan and Iyer then launched a counter-attack, putting together a 93-run partnership that shifted the momentum. Kishan struck 61 off 32 balls, while Iyer reached a 23-ball 50. The pair targeted Michael Bracewell in the 10th over, taking 27 runs from the sequence. However, once Blair Tickner dismissed Kishan, the scoring rate slowed. Milne returned to clean up the tail, finishing with impressive figures of 4/19 as India were restricted to 191/8.

Seifert and Phillips anchor successful chase

New Zealand’s pursuit of 192 began shakily when Arshdeep Singh dismissed Finn Allen in the second over. However, Seifert—who survived a dropped catch on 13—found his rhythm alongside Daryl Mitchell. The duo added 73 runs for the second wicket to stabilize the innings.

Although Varun Chakaravarthy removed Mitchell, the partnership between Seifert and Phillips proved insurmountable for the Indian bowlers. Seifert anchored the innings with a commanding 93, while Phillips provided the finishing power with an unbeaten 65 off 38 deliveries. The pair guided New Zealand to 195/3 in 18 overs, ensuring a comfortable win to close out the series.
