Former India cricketer
Kaif has called for greater transparency from the selection committee, arguing that a player of Shami’s stature deserves a clear explanation for his continued omission. The pacer played a pivotal role in India’s 2023 ODI World Cup campaign, finishing as the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 24 scalps in just seven appearances.
Concerns Over Selection Accountability
Highlighting the lack of communication from the board, Kaif expressed frustration regarding the decision-making process. He noted that Shami’s contributions were instrumental in India reaching the 2023 World Cup final, particularly after he stepped in following Hardik Pandya’s injury to provide essential bowling depth. Kaif emphasised that without Shami’s intervention, the team would have struggled to maintain a balanced bowling attack.
Beyond his international pedigree, Kaif pointed to Shami’s recent efforts in domestic cricket, where the bowler has been active in the Ranji Trophy and other first-class fixtures. Despite taking over 20 wickets in Indian conditions, Shami remains outside the national setup. Kaif argued that if a player is actively performing and proving his fitness in domestic matches, the selectors have a responsibility to explain why he is not being considered for international duty.
Fitness Debates and Workload Management
Reports suggest that concerns regarding Shami’s match fitness and his ability to bowl long spells in red-ball cricket have influenced the selectors' stance. Shami, who last played for India during the Champions Trophy in March 2025 and last featured in a Test match during the 2023 World Test Championship final, has reportedly been bowling shorter spells in domestic matches.
Kaif challenged the logic behind these fitness concerns, drawing a comparison to the workload management strategies applied to other frontline bowlers like Jasprit Bumrah. He suggested that if the team management can accommodate specific workload requirements for one bowler, there should be a consistent approach for others. Kaif maintained that if a bowler is capable of delivering results, the length of their spells should not necessarily be a barrier to selection. The uncertainty surrounding Shami’s status has been further compounded by his recent rest from Bengal’s second-round Ranji Trophy match, leaving his immediate path back to the national team unclear.
