Chinmay Sutar Hits Unbeaten 400 in Ranji Trophy Masterclass

Chinmay Sutar etched his name into the record books on Monday, becoming only the second Indian cricketer to score 400 runs in a single first-class innings. Playing for Mizoram in a Ranji Trophy Plate group match against Nagaland at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima, the 29-year-old delivered a monumental unbeaten 400 to anchor his side's total of 581 for nine declared.

The marathon effort, which spanned 517 balls, featured 46 boundaries and seven sixes. Sutar’s performance was particularly notable as it came in only his second first-class appearance. Having narrowly missed a century on his debut against Manipur, where he was dismissed for 99, the batter ensured he reached the milestone in emphatic fashion before the declaration was called in the 155th over.

A Rare Milestone in Indian Cricket

By reaching the 400-run mark, Sutar joined an elite group of cricketers. He is only the second Indian to achieve this feat in first-class history, following the legendary BB Nimbalkar, who scored an unbeaten 443 for Maharashtra against Kathiawar during the 1948-49 season. Globally, Sutar is the 10th player to reach the quadruple-century mark in first-class cricket.

His innings also saw him surpass Prithvi Shaw’s 379, establishing the second-highest individual score in the history of the Ranji Trophy. The dominance of his knock was highlighted by the fact that the next highest contributor in the Mizoram innings was Jehu Anderson, who scored 69. Sutar was well-supported toward the end of his stay, sharing an unbroken 190-run partnership for the tenth wicket with Lalrempunia Chhakchhuak, who remained 14 not out from 76 deliveries.

Background and Career Context

Sutar’s cricketing roots run deep; his father, Rajesh Sutar, was a former Mumbai off-spinning allrounder who once opened the batting alongside Sachin Tendulkar. Chinmay himself has been a consistent performer in domestic circuits, having represented the India Under-23 side at the 2019 ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup in Bangladesh.

Before his transition to the first-class format, Sutar established a reputation as a prolific run-scorer in the T20 Mumbai League. He was the tournament’s 'Orange Cap' winner in 2025 and played a pivotal role in the Maratha Royals' consecutive title victories. His form in the 2026 edition of the league included crucial half-centuries in both the semi-final and final, further cementing his status as a reliable middle-order presence before his historic breakthrough in the Ranji Trophy.
