Nishad Kumar Secures India's First Para-Athletics Gold at Asian Para Games

Nishad Kumar delivered a standout performance on the opening day of the para-athletics competition at the Asian Para Games in Nagoya, clinching India's first gold medal in the sport. The 27-year-old athlete secured the top spot in the men's long jump T47 event, showcasing his versatility by excelling in a discipline outside of his usual specialty.

Demonstrating remarkable consistency, Kumar recorded a best effort of 7.11m, achieving this distance in both his third and fifth attempts. This victory is particularly notable as it marked his first competitive appearance in the long jump. Having previously secured a gold medal in the high jump T47 event at the Asian Para Games in China, the athlete has now proven his capability across multiple jumping disciplines.

Dominant Display in Nagoya

The competition saw a strong field, but Kumar maintained his composure to finish ahead of his rivals. Omadbek Khasanov representing Uzbekistan claimed the silver medal with a jump of 6.99m, while Sri Lanka's Mohammadu Safran took home the bronze with a distance of 6.55m.

The T47 classification is designated for athletes with upper limb impairments. Kumar’s journey to the podium is rooted in his resilience; he sustained an injury to his right arm at the age of six after an accident involving a grass-cutting machine at his family farm in Amb, Himachal Pradesh.

Looking Ahead to High Jump

Following his success in the long jump, Kumar is set to continue his campaign in Nagoya. As a two-time Paralympic silver medallist, he remains a key figure in the Indian contingent and is scheduled to compete in his primary event, the high jump T47, later in the Games. His performance on Monday has set a high bar for the Indian squad as the para-athletics events continue throughout the tournament.
