Former England captain
Vaughan’s tongue-in-cheek comment arrives amid growing scrutiny regarding India's performance in the field. The team has faced significant criticism following a string of high-profile lapses that have proven costly in recent international fixtures, leading to questions about the squad's technical standards in the field.
Fielding woes and the path forward
The spotlight on India's fielding intensified during the Women's T20 World Cup 2026, where the side struggled to hold onto chances, dropping 10 catches across their five group-stage matches. A particularly difficult outing against South Africa saw Marizanne Kapp benefit from multiple dropped opportunities, contributing to India’s early exit from the tournament. Head coach Amol Muzumdar has previously addressed these concerns, noting that the team requires improvement across all facets of the game, including batting, bowling, and fielding.
Despite the coaching staff's focus on refinement, the issues have persisted in subsequent series. India recorded four dropped catches during their T20I series against Zimbabwe and another four in the opening ODI of their following campaign. Notable errors included missed chances by wicketkeeper Richa Ghosh, as well as lapses from Deepti Sharma and Kranti Gaud. While India successfully secured a 3-0 sweep in the ODI series against Zimbabwe, the recurring nature of these errors has kept the topic of fielding standards at the forefront of discussions.
The BCCI has established rigorous criteria for the incoming fielding coach. Candidates are required to have international playing experience, hold a BCCI Level 'B' coaching certificate or equivalent, and possess a background that includes at least 30 first-class matches. Alternatively, applicants with experience coaching an international side for one season, or a T20 franchise or state team for a minimum of two seasons, are also eligible to apply. The deadline for submissions is November 16, with the board also seeking a new head physiotherapist for the Senior Men's National Team.
India is now preparing for an upcoming all-format tour of South Africa, scheduled to begin in December. The tour will feature a one-off Test in Gqeberha starting December 9, followed by a three-match ODI series beginning December 16 and three T20Is commencing December 26.
