The departure marks the end of a long-standing association between the former Sri Lankan captain and the franchise. While the team reached the playoffs in 2025, the recent season proved to be a significant setback, prompting the organization to begin a search for new leadership. Reports indicate that the franchise has already shortlisted potential candidates for the head coach position, with formal interviews scheduled to commence next week.
A Legacy of Success and Transition
Jayawardene’s tenure with Mumbai Indians has been defined by significant silverware and evolving responsibilities. He first took the helm as head coach in 2017, leading the team to three IPL titles during his initial stint in 2017, 2019, and 2020. Following this period of dominance, he transitioned into the role of global head of performance from 2022 to 2024, before returning to the head coach position for the 2024 season.
Reflecting on his departure, Jayawardene expressed gratitude for his time with the organization, highlighting the support he received from the ownership and the fanbase. He noted that the experience has been a vital part of his professional journey, emphasizing the pride he feels regarding the milestones achieved during his tenure. He specifically thanked Nita Ambani and Akash Ambani for their trust and friendship throughout his years with the team.
Franchise Acknowledges Contributions
Nita Ambani, owner of the Mumbai Indians, paid tribute to Jayawardene’s leadership and character. She highlighted his calm demeanor and integrity as key attributes that benefited the franchise during his time in charge. While his professional role has concluded, the organization indicated that he remains a part of the extended team family.
As the franchise looks toward the future, the focus shifts to the upcoming season. The management is now tasked with appointing a new coach capable of revitalizing the squad and returning the team to its championship-winning form. Jayawardene is not expected to take on any further roles within the organization as he moves on to the next chapter of his career.
