South Africa's pace attack has been dealt a significant blow as Kagiso Rabada is set to miss the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia due to a Grade 3 hamstring tear.

Kagiso Rabada Ruled Out of Australia Test Series with Hamstring Injury

South Africa’s preparations for the upcoming three-match Test series against Australia have been dealt a severe blow, with premier fast bowler Kagiso Rabada ruled out of the entire campaign. The 29-year-old sustained a Grade 3 tear in his right hamstring during a winter conditioning programme, an injury that is expected to sideline him for approximately 10 weeks.

The absence of such a pivotal figure in the bowling attack creates a significant challenge for the Proteas ahead of the opening Test, which is scheduled to commence in Durban on October 9. Following the series opener, the teams are set to meet in Gqeberha on October 18, with the final match of the series taking place in Cape Town starting on October 27.

Donald Confirms Absence as Proteas Reassess Pace Options

The news of Rabada’s unavailability was confirmed by former South African fast bowler and current Lions bowling coach Allan Donald. Speaking to South African media outlet News24 on Sunday, Donald stated that the bowler would be unavailable for the duration of the series against Australia, effectively ending any prospect of him returning to the side for the domestic season.

Rabada’s exclusion leaves a notable void in the South African lineup. Throughout his career, he has been a consistent performer, claiming 340 wickets in 73 Test matches. His record against Australia is particularly impressive, with 58 wickets in 11 Tests at an average of 21.39. Notably, he played a central role in South Africa’s victory in the 2025 World Test Championship final at Lord’s, where he returned match figures of 9-110.

Managing the Bowling Load

With Rabada sidelined, the responsibility of leading the pace attack is expected to fall upon the likes of Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch, and young talent Kwena Maphaka. The team’s depth is further tested by the ongoing fitness concerns surrounding Nandre Burger. The left-arm pacer is currently recovering from a stress fracture in his back, though there remains a possibility that he could regain fitness in time to participate in the Test series.

The Test series against Australia is preceded by a three-match ODI series, which is scheduled to begin in Durban on September 24. As the Proteas look to adjust their bowling plans, the focus will now shift to how the remaining members of the squad manage the workload against a formidable Australian batting lineup.
