Joe Root approaches historic milestone, eyeing Ricky Ponting's legendary record.

Joe Root is set to reclaim the England captaincy for the first time since Ben Stokes’ retirement as the team prepares to face Pakistan in a three-Test series, commencing at Headingley on Wednesday. This match holds special importance for Root, who will lead his side at his home ground in Leeds, where he has the chance to surpass a significant milestone in Test cricket history.

Chasing Records at Headingley

Root currently stands at 7,500 runs from 153 Test innings played on home soil, needing just 79 more runs to eclipse Ricky Ponting’s record of 7,578 runs, achieved over 154 innings in 92 Tests. Should he score 79 or more in the first Test, Root will ascend to the top of the all-time list for runs scored in home Tests, surpassing Ponting. Following these two legends are Sachin Tendulkar with 7,216 runs, Mahela Jayawardene with 7,167, and Jacques Kallis with 7,035 runs.

The current standings for most runs in home Tests are as follows: Ricky Ponting leads with 7,578 runs, followed by Joe Root with 7,500 runs, Sachin Tendulkar at 7,216 runs, Mahela Jayawardene with 7,167 runs, and Jacques Kallis at 7,035 runs. This series against Pakistan not only marks Root’s return to captaincy but also signifies a new era for the England team, with Stephen Fleming stepping in as the new Test head coach, succeeding Brendon McCullum.

Milestones Within Reach

At Headingley, Root has played 11 Tests, accumulating 763 runs. He is on the verge of another notable achievement; if he scores 135 runs in the upcoming match, he will surpass Geoff Boycott’s record of 897 runs, becoming England’s leading Test run-scorer at this venue. The 35-year-old cricketer is already recognized as England’s top run-scorer in both Test and One Day International formats, with a total of 11,834 international runs to his name.

Additionally, Root is just 166 runs shy of reaching 12,000 international runs in a single country, a feat that would make him the first English player and only the sixth overall to achieve this landmark. With numerous records within his grasp, Root’s return to the captaincy could not come at a more pivotal time or place.
