On the first day of India's warm-up game against Sri Lanka XI in Colombo, Test captain Shubman Gill was rested due to an injury.

Shubman Gill, the captain of India's Test cricket team, was sidelined on the first day of a warm-up match against Sri Lanka XI in Colombo due to an impact injury sustained to his right ring finger during a training session on Thursday. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that this decision was made as a precaution, with the medical staff closely observing Gill's recovery in anticipation of the upcoming two-Test series.

In a statement shared on X, the BCCI confirmed, "Captain Shubman Gill sustained an impact injury to his right ring finger during India's practice on Thursday. As a precautionary measure, he will not take the field on Day 1 of the warm-up game against SLC XI. The BCCI Medical Team is monitoring his progress. KL Rahul will lead the team in Gill's absence."

Sri Lanka XI Takes the Lead

Winning the toss, Sri Lanka XI opted to bat first, providing India's bowlers with a chance to adapt to the local conditions ahead of the Test series. The Sri Lankan lineup featured players such as Nishan Madushka, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, and captain Sonal Dinusha, among others. Meanwhile, India’s squad included notable names like Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant, and KL Rahul, who stepped in as captain for the match.

The teams for the warm-up match were as follows: Sri Lanka XI comprised Nishan Madushka, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Pavan Rathnayake, Ahan Wickramasinghe, Sonal Dinusha (c), Anjala Bandara (wk), Nipun Dhananjaya, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, Asanka Manoj, Isitha Wijesundera, Ramesh Mendis, Dilum Sudeera, and Keshara Nuwantha. India's lineup included Shubman Gill, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Sai Sudharsan, Devdutt Padikkal, KL Rahul (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Auqib Nabi, and Gurnoor Brar.

Preparation for the Upcoming Test Series

This warm-up match serves as India's sole red-ball fixture before the first Test, making each session crucial for the team's preparation. Head coach Gautam Gambhir emphasized the importance of maximizing this opportunity, despite potential weather disruptions. He encouraged the players to push their limits and ensure they are fully prepared for the challenges ahead.

Gambhir addressed the team, stating, "We know what is in front of us. We can do volume, we can push our limits, we can tick all the boxes and come the 15th morning, whether we are batting first or bowling first, we will be absolutely ready with every answer to every question thrown at us." He urged the players to focus on their preparation, saying, "So make sure to tick all the boxes from now on."
