India and Pakistan Drawn Together for 2027 ICC Men's ODI World Cup

The International Cricket Council has officially unveiled the group structure for the 2027 Men's ODI World Cup, setting the stage for a high-profile clash between arch-rivals India and Pakistan. The two cricketing giants have been placed in Group A, where they will also face defending champions Australia, as well as co-hosts Zimbabwe, Afghanistan, and a yet-to-be-determined qualifier.

The announcement, made in Cape Town, confirms that the tournament will return to the African continent for the first time since 2003. The 14-team competition is scheduled to commence on October 2, 2027, and will conclude with the final on November 21. Matches will be spread across 12 venues in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, with a total of 57 games set to be played throughout the event.

Tournament Format and Qualification

The 2027 edition introduces a revamped four-stage format designed to determine the world champions. The process begins with a Super Series involving the three lowest-ranked teams, the winner of which will secure the final spot in the main tournament. Once the 14 teams are finalized, they will be split into two groups of six. The top three sides from each group, along with the next best-ranked team overall, will progress to a seven-team Super 7 round-robin stage. From there, the top four teams will advance to the semifinals, leading to the tournament final in Johannesburg.

Ten nations have already confirmed their participation based on their ICC ODI rankings. Hosts South Africa and Zimbabwe have received automatic entry, while India, Australia, England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan have qualified through their standing in the rankings. The remaining four positions will be filled via the ongoing qualification process.

Group Dynamics and Venue Details

Group B features co-hosts South Africa alongside England, New Zealand, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, and a second qualifier. India, currently the top-ranked ODI side, will be led by captain Shubman Gill in his first World Cup at the helm. The group-stage encounter between India and Pakistan is expected to be a focal point of the tournament, with the fixture scheduled to take place in Johannesburg on October 10.

The tournament will utilize a wide array of historic venues. South Africa will host matches at eight locations, including the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg, Centurion in Tshwane, and Newlands in Cape Town. Zimbabwe will host games at the Harare Sports Club, Queens Sports Club in Bulawayo, and the Fale Mosi-oa-Tunya International Cricket Stadium in Victoria Falls. Namibia will host its matches at the Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
