NEW DELHI: In a reassuring update for fans, India’s batting coach Sitanshu Kotak confirmed that wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant is expected to return to the crease after sustaining an injury during the second Test against Sri Lanka in Colombo. The incident occurred on Sunday when Pant was struck on his left arm by a short delivery from Sri Lankan pacer Lahiru Kumara, forcing him to retire hurt after scoring just three runs.

During the third session of play, Pant attempted to pull a short ball from Kumara but misjudged the connection, resulting in the ball hitting his arm. The impact was significant enough for Pant to grimace in pain, prompting the Indian team physiotherapist to rush onto the field. After applying an ice pack and attempting to tape the injury, it became clear that Pant was still in discomfort, leading to his departure from the field alongside the physiotherapist.

Padikkal Shines Amidst Challenges

With Pant sidelined, Ravindra Jadeja stepped in to continue the innings alongside Devdutt Padikkal. Padikkal showcased remarkable resilience, scoring 117 runs off 168 balls, marking his second Test century in consecutive matches. His previous century was a notable 167 runs in the first Test held in Galle, where India secured a 165-run victory.

Despite facing early setbacks, including being dropped on both his first and second balls, Padikkal capitalized on the missed opportunities, demonstrating patience and skill on a challenging pitch. His performance was crucial as India navigated a day filled with wicket losses, and Kotak commended Padikkal for his ability to seize the moment. “Padikkal is making the most of the opportunities he got,” Kotak remarked, highlighting the young batter's potential.

Series Context and Future Outlook

India currently leads the two-match series 1-0 following their victory in the first Test. As the team looks ahead to the next day of play, the return of Rishabh Pant could bolster their batting lineup significantly. Kotak's confidence in Pant's recovery suggests that the team is optimistic about maintaining their momentum in the series against Sri Lanka.
