Gautam Gambhir Praises Collective Effort as India Clinch T20I Series Against New Zealand

India head coach Gautam Gambhir has emphasised the importance of collective resilience following his side's 3-2 T20I series victory over New Zealand. Despite suffering a seven-wicket loss in the final encounter at Seddon Park on Sunday, the tourists successfully defended their early series lead to claim the overall result.

Taking to social media shortly after the conclusion of the series, Gambhir underscored the team-first philosophy he has instilled in the squad. He described the triumph as a shared achievement, stating that the group was built and won as a collective unit, always playing for India. This sentiment echoed his earlier comments regarding the team's mental approach, where he famously declared that there is no room for fear in his coaching philosophy.

A Decisive Start and Tactical Resilience

Reflecting on the series, Gambhir highlighted the team's ability to perform under pressure from the very beginning. He specifically pointed to the opening match, which the squad navigated successfully despite the fatigue of a 15-hour flight and limited preparation time. This initial victory set the tone for the series, allowing India to establish an unassailable 3-0 lead before the hosts mounted a late comeback in the final two games.

In the fifth T20I, India faced an early setback, slipping to 19/2 before mounting a recovery to post a competitive total of 191/8. Ishan Kishan anchored the innings with a rapid 61 off 32 balls, supported by captain Shreyas Iyer, who struck 50 from 23 deliveries. Naman Dhir and Nitish Kumar Reddy also provided valuable contributions of 33 and 22 respectively. However, New Zealand’s Adam Milne proved difficult to contain, finishing with impressive figures of 4/19.

New Zealand's Late Surge

The hosts responded with a dominant batting display in the final match, chasing down the target in just 18 overs. Tim Seifert led the charge with a blistering 93 off 50 balls, while Glenn Phillips remained unbeaten on 65 from 38 deliveries. Their 86-run partnership for the third wicket effectively took the game away from the visitors.

While the final result saw New Zealand claim back-to-back victories to close the gap, the series outcome had already been decided by India's earlier dominance. Gambhir’s focus remains on the squad's ability to embrace challenging situations, a trait he believes was instrumental in securing the series win despite the late pressure from the home side.
