At the Nondescripts Cricket Club (NCC) Ground in Colombo, a notable reunion took place between Dhruv Jurel and Sarfaraz Khan, who had just joined the Indian cricket team. The two players share a significant bond, having made their Test debuts together against England in Rajkot two years prior. However, their paths have diverged since then, with Jurel establishing himself as a regular in the Test squad, while Sarfaraz has faced challenges in securing consistent playing time.

Despite being backed by the management as a specialist batter, Jurel has yet to solidify his position in the playing XI, particularly with Rishabh Pant, India's primary wicketkeeper, in the mix. His journey has been marked by frustration; although he has shown promise in preparatory matches, he has struggled to replicate that success on the international stage. Ahead of the 2024 Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Jurel was sent to train with the India A team, where he performed admirably, scoring 80 and 68 in two matches at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG). In the four Tests against the West Indies, Jurel achieved his maiden Test century in Ahmedabad but struggled against South Africa, accumulating only 29 runs across four innings. The management expressed dissatisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the need for improvement. His challenges continued in a one-off Test against Afghanistan, where he scored just 19 runs, raising concerns about his shot selection and decision-making.

With Sarfaraz Khan rejoining the team, Jurel's position may be under scrutiny, but he is expected to retain his spot for the Galle Test.
