According to a statement from Daniels' spokesperson, the family is "deeply disappointed" and feels "profoundly disrespected" by LSU's choice to assign the number to another player. The spokesperson emphasized that the Daniels family believed the number would be preserved as a tribute to Jayden's remarkable contributions to the university. "To see his number given to another player is incredibly disappointing and feels like a failure to honor the significance of what Jayden accomplished at LSU," the statement read.
Controversy Over Jersey Number
DJ Pickett, who previously wore No. 3 during his freshman season in 2025, was seen in the No. 5 jersey when LSU commenced its preseason practice last week. This decision has raised eyebrows, particularly regarding first-year head coach Lane Kiffin's role in the matter. Kiffin stated that Pickett had been promised the number during his recruitment in December 2024, a commitment he felt obligated to honor. "When a kid is promised something to come to a school, he should wear it," Kiffin explained, indicating that he had conducted thorough research into the situation before making his decision.
Former LSU coach Brian Kelly, who was at the helm during Daniels' tenure, acknowledged that he had refrained from issuing the No. 5 jersey to Pickett out of respect for Daniels. In the cease and desist letter sent to Ausberry, attorney Adam Kenner highlighted that Daniels' contract with LSU allowed the university to utilize his NIL for 180 days following his final college game. Kenner's letter demanded that LSU immediately halt any further use or promotion of Daniels' NIL, warning that any continued use would be pursued through legal channels. As of now, LSU has not publicly responded to the letter.
Daniels, who transferred to LSU after three seasons at Arizona State, had an impressive 2023 season, throwing for 3,812 yards and 40 touchdowns while also rushing for 1,134 yards. He was selected as the second overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft by the Washington Commanders and earned the title of Offensive Rookie of the Year. However, his subsequent season was marred by injuries, limiting him to just seven games.
