Chennai Super Kings are gearing up for a major change following Stephen Fleming's 18-year tenure with the team, as former I.

Srikkanth turns down Eoin Morgan for CSK coaching position, advises him to remain in commentary.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are on the brink of a major transformation following the conclusion of Stephen Fleming’s 18-year tenure with the franchise. As the team seeks a new head coach for the first time in nearly two decades, former Indian cricketer K Srikkanth has put forth the name of Michael Hussey as a strong candidate to lead the team into its next chapter.

Fleming, who initially joined CSK as a player during the inaugural Indian Premier League (IPL) season in 2008, transitioned to the role of head coach in 2009. Over his remarkable 17-year career with the franchise, he played a pivotal role in shaping CSK’s identity, leading the team to five IPL championships and two Champions League T20 titles. His departure follows a challenging period for CSK, which has seen the team miss the playoffs for three consecutive seasons. Fleming has since accepted a new position as the head coach of England’s Test team, succeeding Brendon McCullum.

Srikkanth Dismisses Other Candidates

As discussions about Fleming’s successor intensify, there has been speculation regarding potential candidates, including former England captain Eoin Morgan. However, Srikkanth has dismissed the idea of appointing Morgan, expressing his reservations about the former player’s coaching capabilities. “I won't go for Eoin Morgan for sure. He was a good player and a good captain for England. But as a coach, I won't accept him as an option. Even for KKR as their captain, he didn't do anything great. It'll be best if he just sticks to commentary,” Srikkanth stated during a recent YouTube session. He also advised against considering Brendon McCullum, who previously coached Kolkata Knight Riders, suggesting that CSK should look elsewhere for leadership.

Hussey: The Preferred Choice

Instead, Srikkanth advocates for Michael Hussey, a former CSK opener and current batting coach, to take the helm. “CSK don't need anyone from outside when they have Mr. Cricket with him. Michael Hussey should be the automatic head coach. He will be the best choice,” he asserted. This coaching vacancy is part of a broader transition for CSK, which has relied heavily on the partnership between Fleming and legendary captain MS Dhoni. With Dhoni’s future uncertain, Srikkanth emphasizes the need to clarify the captain's role before finalizing the coaching structure. “But what will MS Dhoni's place in CSK be going forward? That arrangement has to be fixed first, and only then will everything else fall in place,” he concluded, highlighting the significance of this decision in CSK's evolution.
